We recently finished a two year restoration of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.  This historic building previously known as Hotel Utah, is an amazing icon of Salt Lake City.  The ornate white edifice is constructed of glazed terracotta and brick.  Restoration included the replacement of over 1,300 terracotta units, 100% mortar replacement at the historic 1910 portion of the building, and many other extensive masonry repairs.

The Child Family has a long history with this building.  Earl Child, my grandfather, was the mason contractor during the 1973 renovation which included the construction of the two north addition wings.  My father, Richard Child, worked on the building during the 1973 renovation and then performed restoration and cleaning work to the building during the mid-1980's.  It is amazing to be of the third generation of masons from the same family to have worked on this magnificent building.

Replacement of window sill and lion units

Most people will never even realize that a significant restoration effort took place because the replacement and repair scope was nearly perfectly integrated within the existing building.
